Seed Phrase Hygiene
How to treat a recovery seed like a spare house key for your coins — without fear-porn, and without posting it into the cloud “just once.”
One sentence: The seed is the wallet. The app is a viewer. Anyone with the seed has the coins — forever, anywhere.
What a seed actually is
Most modern wallets show a 12- or 24-word recovery phrase (BIP-39 family). Those words encode the master secret used to derive addresses. If you lose the phone but keep the seed, you can rebuild. If you keep the phone but lose the seed and the device dies, the coins are gone.

A practical backup ladder
- Paper, week one — legible, no smudge, date it, no photo.
- Second paper or metal — different location when the balance is no longer “practice money.”
- Hardware wallet — seed generated on device; still back up the seed offline.
Threats that actually show up
- Phishing sites that look like wallet UI and ask you to “import to verify.”
- Malware that watches the clipboard for pasted addresses (pair with seed theft less often — but both exist).
- Physical loss — fire, flood, moving house. A single kitchen drawer is not a strategy.
- Social engineering — someone who already knows you hold crypto and wants the phrase, not the phone.
60-second seed hygiene check

- ☐ At least one offline copy exists outside the phone
- ☐ You tested restore once with a throwaway-or-known wallet
- ☐ Anyone with physical access to your home still cannot casually find the words on a sticky note
Dogecoin-specific note: Low fees make practice restores and test wallets cheap. Use that. Create a throwaway wallet, write its seed, wipe the app, restore, confirm — then destroy that seed and never reuse it for real funds.
